This morning I think I'm delirious because Evan woke up at 6 a.m...!
And in this state with my coffe I.V. Drip in place I'm thinking of our summer..the busy-ness, and my struggle to keep Evan's "sensory diet" under control. Needless to say, I'm totally worn out. thank God school starts next week..but..it's still a week away!!
I have come up with a small list for myself (yes, another list that goes round and round in my head) not for anyone to feel sorry..just take it in for what it is!
10 reasons I know my son has a touch of autism.
1. You do not add chocolate chips to a peanut butter sandwich or pancake or anything that Evan normally eats plain..even if I just wanted to do something "extra" special! :(
2. As parents, we learned long ago NOT to change things or add pictures or wall stickies to Evan's room..this causes him to flip-out, unless you have him involved and he decides he wants it...then he's ok with it.
3. Reading "Parents" magazine or any of the other magazines are a joke. The information in the magazine applies to typical kids..and I'm just gonna say it..you have no idea how easy you got it!! I would have had three children by now..just saying!!
4. our ABA therapists are like Evan's long lost Aunt/Uncle..they are here so much, you don't bother trying to clean the house up when they come.
5. We spend more hours in the waiting room every week, than at the park...because..
6. ...I have only about 2 days to spend at the park a week! And that's only if we can find friends to join us..so I take pictures and make events out of those days!!
7. A sand-box we thought was a perfect idea for the summer and meeting his sensory needs is now a sand-sludge..!! He brilliantly took the hose to it, but hey, it still worked out ok, both kids find equal enjoyment in it!!
8. No matter what, being around typical kiddos is still, sometimes, a little vulnerable for me..it's a constant reminder of more work we need to do. But, it's also a good thing, it provides a goal to work on and a reason to celebrate his progress!!
9. He found last years shirts and carefully hung all the shirts back up in his closet. (he has a sentimental attachment to clothes lately has had a hard time accepting that he's growing into a big boy..why? I have no idea!) But, good news, now i give him his clothes to put away..and he does!! ;)
10. I'm tired..school hasn't started back up yet..?!!!!!!
Lol..well, despite my whining, it's been a great summer overall..but, we are all itching for school. Evan has asked me several times when he'll go back. Something in him clicks when he goes back..everyone notices a sense of calm over him. And, yes, I try to re-create that for him...but, he's also a little boy who doesn't want mommy to dictate his day..or play-time!!
Next summer will be better, I know it will..we'll be in our new house..lol!! No, really, the kids will be a year older and we'll have a year of more success stories..just like the last two..Praise God!!
